2004 Ford Focus C-Max handbrake will not apply

Car was working fine and handbrake just stopped working and will not apply but i do not know wether this handbrake is operated by cable or not to try and sort out problem.

Cable,
well four cables to be accurate.
two short one come out of the rear drums where they connect to two longer ones where they connect to the brake lever cable.
Woops!
that's 5.
Or it could be the shoes are worn out,
or the self adjusters are seized or a fault with the rear wheel cylinders.
Oh and saying it was working fine doesn't really mean much,
it could have been working on only one side and it would have held and now that side is gone.
I'm not trying to be a pain here but without putting it up in the air then actually checking the cable system then taking the wheels and drums off to look there's just no way to guess.
Oh and the drums aren't the easiest to get off,
I had to use a slide puller to get the last ones off and the last time I used that tool was over ten years ago.
Took me a while to find the tool!
And the drums/bearing are held on with a crazy nut that has to be renewed each time it is removed.
As you may gather I'm not a fan of this cars rear brakes.
Stupid design!

Disc pads or brake shoes fitted ?
