Transmission power train cuts out

2007 Ford Fiesta 1.4 ZETEC
Car: Ford Fiesta
Year: 2007
Variant: 1.4 ZETEC
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The car has a dual manual/auto transmission. It developed a problem. The dashboard indicators said there was a transmission problem - consult owners book' A mate said it must be the ECU because when it first starts the transmission is ok - as soon as I move along - or reverse - the warning indicator comes on and the transmission loses power. Ford garages said it was the ECU and quoted me £1000 to replace it. Is there another way ? The car has only done 25,000 miles. These dual shift transmissions are pathetic.
