my reverse lights only work when holding the gear lever towards the drivers seat???

It sounds like one of the contact points that completes the circuit for the reversing lights when you engage reverse gear has become unseated or is worn, your best bet is too take it too a garage so they can check the contact points, its not a major job so should be fairly cheap.

Either the switch is knackered , needing adjusted (if possible ) or gear linkage is worn .
