Intermitant fault

2005 Ford Fiesta 1.3
Car: Ford Fiesta
Year: 2005
Variant: 1.3
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi Im in need of some help. Im desperate. About 3 months ago I was driving on the motorway when I had to slow down, the engine started to lag, or chug, the engine management light came on and white smoke started to emit from the exhaust. THe next day I took it to a garage who couldnt find the fault. I then drove the car the next day and the problem had gone for a short while and then came back. A diagnostic shows misfire on one. I have had coils changed, leads changed, injectors checked, but no joy. I can drive the car all day and no problem or I can drive for a few hours and the judder starts, if I continue to drive the smoke emits from the exhaust and fuel consumption goes through the roof. The engine light can be either on, flashing, or off. The first sign of the problem is when I dip clutch and engage gear, the car will do a slight judder and then be ok after a second, but it will get worse and worse from then on. Then the next day no fault. PLease, please help I have had 3 mechanics on it all of which say different things.

these types of faults can be some of the worse to remedy. cos when you have the ford man there it runs great. so this is what i would do. when the fault re-appears make a note of all infomation you can. check your gauges, water temp in particular. have you just filled with petrol, or have you been running a long time on the same tank? was you on the open road, or in trafic? as soon as the problem starts, stop asap, switch off, and then re start does that help? if not open the petrol fuel cap, do you hear a air rush? or does this help? check the water header tank, is the water level at the correct height? does your heater blow hot when you turn it on? if you can answer as many of these as possible then repost here, l will or someone here will be able to help further. so l cant offer a quick fix. but what l would say is l dont think it is electronic, assuming your garage tested the car allowing it to get really hot.

Well I have checked all gauges, water temp is ok.Stopping the engine and restarting is of no use and I do hear an air rush when opening the fuel tank. The problem appears to occur when in heavy traffic. I hope this is of use.
