2006 Ford Fiesta rev hunting, stalling when driving!! please help

Car: Ford Fiesta
Year: 2006
Variant: 1.25 Climate
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When starting the car (mainly from cold) the car rev hunts between 500 - 2000 revs for approx 15 secs, if the revs drop to 500 the car stalls. The car also stalls when doing small maneouvers such as reversing in and out of parking space. (It started when cold weather started but not sure if that just coincidence)

The car has started stalling when idling at junctions, ( I am having to rev car at junctions to prevent it from stalling) and recently it has stalled 6 times when driving, twice when going round a roundabout, once at 30mph (when slowing for speed camera) and once at 40mph when exiting a dual carraige way via slip road. Each time it has happened I have eased my foot off the accelerator rather than braked to reduce my speed. If it stalls when I am on a straight I can depress accelerator and it will jolt it, but the twice I have been going round a roundabout I have not been able to do it. I have had to quickly restart the car, but then obviously I loose all power steering, and on one occassion I mounted the kerb, as I couldn't start car quick enough to get round the curve of the roundabout :(

The car has started to bunny hop on occassions and pull off from junctions etc has become slow, as though somethin is holding on to back of car, then it gives, and car jolts then goes. It feels as though there is not enough petrol getting to the engine,

I had my car serviced and checked over by a ford garage who found no problems with it. I asked them to check all the tubes (as I had similar prob on my astra a few years ago and that was split breather tube which rectified prob) but they said all were sealed as shud be, had fuel filters changed etc. Had engine management of car updated.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it has happened 3 times with my little girl in the car, and I don't feel safe or confident driving it at the moment. My dad suggested I try redex would this be feasable?

Thanks in advance for your replies

Hi, I had same problem with my fiesta...stalling when slowing down and in dangerous situations such as junctions, roundabouts etc. My usual garage was unable to figure the problem although they replaced a valve and charged almost £80 inc.labour.!(this was one of several visits with the problem)After collecting the car it stalled twice on the short journey home!Needless to say I was back there a.s.a.p.whereupon they "cleaned it up"and hoped it was sorted.!!It was`nt and although it didn`t stall all of the time it was very worrying. I decided to go to a different garage where they adjusted the THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR.They said that I would experience some higher revving, which I did but it never stalled again!!If I remember rightly the mechanic told me that this was a problem with some fiestas.I kept the car for a further 6 months until the mot was due and then knowing it would fail due to the bodywork(it was 14 years old-I`d owned it for 3years) got rid and now have a peugeot 106 which I love.! Hope this info. helps you.

Thanks for the reply daisy :o)

Just thought I would update you all, I was out driving yesterday, and car cut out 4 times on a 4 mile drive, 3 times at 20-30 mph the other going round a corner, which was scary as I lost all power steering, and with a bad shoulder was difficult to steer! :(

I called the AA out, he connected the car to computer diagnositcs, nothing was stored on my car. SO he started car and it rev hunted, and he said he thought it was my idle control valve. He took the thick pipe coming into left hand side of engine off, and sprayed some cleaning stuff down it. The car immediately started reving, and was rev hunting. It then cut out completely, and did this twice. On second time he sprayed more spray in and let it soak, he then turned engine back on, it started great went to 1500 revs and slowly down to 750. My car sounded happier, it wasn't jumpin or revind anymore.

He said if problem returns I will need idle control valve changing.

Hope this helps someone else.
