2012 Ford Fiesta excessive revving

when driving along at average speed, 40 - 50 mph, the car suddenly revs up and the rev counter shoots up to between 5 and 7 rpm. This only happens occasionally and lasts for up to 3 seconds each time it occurs

Sure it's not clutch slipping ? foot on pedal perhaps ?
