Here a clunk then steering goes stiff as if steering lock try's to go on . Garage fitted new belt but still problem they say may be peer steering pump but it very expensive and want to know if it going to solve it

I would get your garage to check steering column intermediate shaft / coupling which when worn can cause this problem .

Forgot to add not a big or expensive job to replace ,
