Over revving

2000 Ford Fiesta 1.8 td
Car: Ford Fiesta
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.8 td
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
when warm the engine starts to rev higher than usual. when changing gear the revs jump up. when stationary the idle revs are much higher than normal, even out of gear.

Sounds like too much air is getting into the engine - check for split air hoses around the top of the engine. It could also be the inlet manifold gasket has a leak - to check this spray WD40 around the gasket, if the engine revs surge slightly then air (&WD40) is getting through.
