2006 Ford Fiesta very stiff gear stick

Over the last couple of days the gear stick is getting more and more stiff and difficult to get into gear. Prior to this everything was working perfectly and in about two to three days its gone from being ok to slightly stiff to very stiff. Any suggestions as to what may have caused this and the best way to solve the issue??
