1998 Ford Escort smoke on start up, not while driving!

Car: Ford Escort
Year: 1998
Variant: 1.8 - 16V GTI
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi

Please help and please no Ford jokes.

I have an Escort GTI 1998. This problem only started a few weeks ago.

if the car has been sat for a few hours, the car will smoke really badly from the exhaust, the longer you leave it the worse the smoke is but it will stop after 2 or 3 miles and will not smoke anymore.

The smoke is white in appearence, I can smell petrol but the garage is telling me its oil! ???? this issue is getting quite embarrasing so please any suggestions what it could be.

Sounds like unburnt fuel.

Could be valve guides letting oil into the cylinders when stopped. You may like to get your cyclinder pressures tested. There is a compoud called Stop Smoke which might help for a while. It goes in with your engine oil and I have known it to work.
