How do you replace the rack and pinion on a 2000 Ford Escort

Answer,

I just did this and its not difficult if you can get the car up on a lift. If you'll be on your back in your garage it becomes a much more difficult job. Raise the vehicle the best you can and block the rear wheels and place jack stands firmly under the car. Remove both front wheels and unbolt your steering tie rod ends. Pop them out of the knuckle. Remove the cross member. On MTX cars you will want to disconnect the shift linkage. disconnect the steering shaft inside the car at the floor board. Remove the pressure and return line on the steering gear. There are two bols that connect the rack on the drivers side of the steering gear and two more on the passenger side. Now the fun starts, you'll want to get another set of eyes and hands. Wiggle the assembly out the passenger side wheel well. It will go but it will need the extra helper to clear everything.

Install is the reverse.

Look closely at your pressure line because now is the time to replace it if its rusty or damaged.
