1998 Ford Escort idling fast then normal/using alot of oil/smocking

My boyfriend recently purchused a gti 1.8 zetec ford escort. It had bin stood since april and passed its mot fine.
However recently we have been experiencing problems with it, we already knew that the front pipe of the exhaust needed two new bolts in as they got bent so whether this is why we don't know. What is happening is when setting off first thing alot of smoke is coming out of the exhaust espicially if you go quite fast it does this for a couple of miles then stops, the car is also using alot of oil and revs high when stopping then drops to normal idle.

when you say using alot of oil is it leaking have you check for any leaks also with the idle you may find idle control valve is sticking try putting a fuel system cleaner in like redex this may solve it

i would say the same as nightcrawler regarding the revs going up and down but the smoke side of things ge the cars engine compression tested if this is low then you have a piston ring problem ie oil blowing past the rings and being burnt ie smoke out the back which would use alot of oil

Thanks have a tester so will get it done this weekend and see what it says.
There is know oil leaks just using alot. There is know loss of power either.

If it stops burning oil, ie blue smoke after a while then there cannot be a piston ring problem as this would not really go away. Have a garage check that their is not an engine breather problem or someone has put some vac pipes in the wrong place.
