1996 Ford Escort losing power

Car: Ford Escort
Year: 1996
Variant: 1.8 TD LX
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I recently bought the car and after it standing on my drive for a few days i noticed a puddle of oil underneath, i have had a look but cant seem to see where it comes from so i have just cleaned up the underside and around the turbo to see if i can find the problem, BUT....................
I dont think the Turbo is kicking in.
When i rev the engine to about 4000rpm it makes a sound like something is being sucked in but is blocked and then the rev counter begins to drop regardless of how i press the accelerator and loads of smoke comes out of the exhaust. also i had 3 other people in the car and attempted to take it up a bit of a bank not very steep but still the car didnt have the power to get up it and from what i know of diesels this shouldnt be the case. can anybody shed any light on this for me. Thanks.

I dont know what the oil leak is but you need to get that looked at. As far as the lack of power i had a similar problem with my misses Golf last year after we left it standing for a while it felt like it was getting enough fuel and wouldnt pick up revs at all. I dont think its your turbo as when they pack in your car wont run at all, have you had a look at your air mass sensor (its the sensor on the air pipe going into the inlet manifold), could also be the fuel filter?, have you put fresh fuel in? could also be glow plugs? lots for you to check there let me know....

hi for the solution to oil leak it might be from the oil pressure switch that is located by the oil filter its a complete pain to get to but very common thats as long as its the same place on diesels to petrols
