2000 Fiat Brava gear one not working

When i start the car and put it into first gear and start to lift the clutch to the biting point the car does'nt move at all and the engine just revs and if you can get the car going there is a screeching noise when you are driving,Once you are in a higher gear(3,4,5,)the car is fine. any help would be greatly appreciated.

take to garage and ask to cheak linkage on gear box if linkage is loose it you will not get first
2 nd could be internal problem on main shaft

Sounds like a problem with the syncro hub for 1st & 2nd gear. Unless Fiat have a known fault, it sounds like the syncro hub is worn and needs replaced. That may be costly as the gearbox will need removed and stripped down. Might be better getting a second hand gearbox. First I would make sure there are no obstructions on the linkage and that is stopping you properly engaging 1st & 2nd, it may be that a cable, hose or something is fouling the linkage. Ian
