2000 Daewoo Matiz drives well but every now and then loos all power for a split second then engine light comes on and stays on for a few mins

We have a very strange problem, Its almost like you drive over a pot hole and you loose grip and the car slows dematicly then resumes poer all in less than a second.
It seems to occure at random and for no reason, it has had a full service new Timing belt. The car runs great till this happens then the engine warning light stays on for about 1 minuet then goes off untill it happens again. The only thing i have oticed it the syncromesh of 1st gear to 2nd gear is not brill but i dont push the car so its never been a problem.
Any help or suguestion for what could be wrong would be great.

Gearbox synchromesh shouldn't be a cause of what you describe but maybe this could apply ?
I have had my 2004 Matiz from new. The main problem I encountered was the engine management light coming on. After several visits to the dealers to gt it checked under warranty, and reset, a sensor was replaced. I noticed a pattern to the light illuminating, and figured that as long as I didn't let my fuel gauge drop below half, then it doesn't illuminate. It is nearly 1.5 years since it last came on - I think there is a problem with the fuel outlet from the tank being too high, so if fuel levels drop below half, when you turn a left corner the fuel slops away from the outlet, air gets sucked in the fuel pipes, and engine management light illuminates.
So, to preven engine light coming on, treat the half way mark as empty. It works for me.
