2002 Citroen Xsara car stops in the middle of the road.

After driving about 2 km my car stopped in the middle of the road, I got a new battery after two days it stopped in the middle of the road again and it is not starting. When you turn key, the dashboard light does not come out but after some seconds. When you kick start it, the dashboard lights turned off. What would you advise me to do.

If it was o.k after fitting new battery , would be worthwhile getting alternator tested .
