2000 Citroen Xsara engine overheating

Car: Citroen Xsara
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.4
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
After driving the car for a mile or so the temperature gauge goes to red. The radiator and top hose are cold. I assumed the thermostat was the problem, but changing has made no difference. What next? I'm thinking maybe temperature sensor or impeller. Any suggestions?

get a sniff test done to check the headgasket isnt blown

If the head gasket had blown wouldn't it shown in the oil?

Depends where gasket is blown if it mixes with oil or not .

Would any dealership - Ford for instance - be able to do it? Any idea on cost?

Any garage with the test kit can do it , simple test . Have you tried bleeding cooling system ?

No, not tried to bleed system - not sure where all bleeds are. One at hose to top of radiator. System not touched prior to problem occurring so is it likely that there could be air in the system?

Every possibility ater changing thermostat there could be air in system. Worth a try and wont cost you anything to do .

okay, thanks guys. I'll try bleeding the system first, and if that fails I'll get the sniff test done.
