Normally I'd test the coolant temperature sensor.
It's responsible for "putting on the choke" as it were.

When were the basics like plugs last checked / replaced ?

The plugs have been changed you sugested coolent level sencer could you tell me were it is the car is citroen xara picasso 1600 2006 petrol it will start after about 3 to 5 a tempts thanks

If I recall it's into the thermostat housing.
But my suggestion is to test it.
Simple diagnostics live data will read what temperature the ECU is "seeing".
I don't replace parts on a guess.

might be losing a bit of compression...these are prone to sticky lifters...once the oil has circulated a bit no more issues
