having trouble engaging 2nd gear,all other gears r no problem through the whole range.oil is ok gear linkage seems ok though wouldn't know if it was not (what to look for)mechanic said about clutch clearance but surely that would affect all gears ,another said gearbox,so im in a bit of a pickle as to what to do first,r there n e other things you clever people can suggest I check before throwing money at it

Have to verify gear lnkage / cable o.k first .Clutch should not affect the one gear .If that's o.k could be 2nd gear synchro hub worn which is a much bigger job to do and more expensive .

you could try lubricating the linkage ball joint sockets but it does sound like a syncro fault i assume it crunches when changeing from 1st to second and from 3rd back to 2nd try doing the change slower if it improves it the baulk ring on 2nd gear will be worn options are a good second hand gearbox or a repair on your box if you can find a reputable gearbox specialist that wont rip you of would say second hand box would be between £75 and £150
