2000 Citroen Xsara rattling noise

Hello again everyone. Posted a query a few days ago about a very annoying and consistant rattling noise coming from the front ...left/middle/right of the car. Sounds just like a stone rattling around in the exhuast. Someone mentioned it may be the exhaust shield. but have just had the car checked out with a friend who owns his own MOT business. He has come up with 2 suggestions. No 1, if it has gotten worse, there may be something loose inside the exhaust - no 2, its possible that a stone has worked its way up into the suspension area. Hubby has just been out and removed wheels on both front ends of the car and all he has found is slightly loose dust shield. I am of course at a loss...but any further suggestions or advice would be so welcome...thanking you all in advance...Hazel

Could also check for anything rolling around in the scuttle tray. That is the area between the bulk head and the windscreen under the bonnet, where the wiper motor and blower motor are placed. If there is a little stone in there then it can roll from left/middle/right and back as you said... Hope this helps.

Could be a loose baffle plate inside exhaust / silencer or even cat convertor breaking up inside , though you usually get other symptoms .Banging the pipe / boxes with the palm of your hand should show if fault inside .
