2000 Citroen Xsara mot failure abs light does not come on or goes off

took vehicle for mot 23 jan 2012 it has failed .so the mechanic stated not a problem i instructed him to repair the vehicle and ring me when he had it retested.anti lock breaking system warning lamp does not illuminate .so i began to be worried when i had not heard from this mechanic.so i rang him on retest day .after some confusion if i had a vehicle with him .he said no mate your car will need new clocks in it to see what the abs problem is.no other way to sort it out.told me talking 400.00.can any one tell me if this is the correct soloution told me bulb cant be replaced if blown .i have recovered the car back home .help would be greatfull here please

It depends if the mechanic is just guessing, the first thing to establish is wether the computor will read any faults or live data, if not its more likely to be a power issue, basics need to be checked first ie fuses, if comp can read abs then you should be able to force the light on, its possible the instrument cluster is at fault but you will be able to get one from a breakers yard for around 50 quid

THIS HAPPENED TO ME WITH MY l200, HAD IT ON COMPUTER CHECK, THE GUY LAUGHED AND SAID GO BACK AND TELL EM THERE AINT ON FITTED ON THIS CAR, HE WAS CORRECT, DON'T ALWAYS ASSUME A MECHANIC IS GOD , THERE ARE VERY VERY GOOD ONE'S BUT THERE IS THE ODD IFFY ONE ABOUT,
