2003 Citroen Xsara Picasso engine not running right

Engine when idle then race's for a split second before going back to idle, sometimes tempoary loss of power then it will be ok again, there is no engine management lights currently showing.

could be loads of different things
check fuel rail pressure when the fault occurs if it falls the lift pump mau be braking up.
check crank sensor signal doesnt dissappear temporaly.
check vaccume system for leaks
diagnosis will be much easier if you have a scanner with data list function,

i forgot to add i have the 1.6 petrol on a y reg, but its doing excactly the same.
