2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso alarm not responding

Cannot turn alarm on or off with either fob or key, though the car is drivable. However, the alarm will sometimes sound when driving (very embarassing!)but not every time. The flashing red light on the console which usually flashes steadily when car is locked and stationery is on all the time, and flashes intermittently. Knowledgeble friend had a look for me but has foxed him. Any ideas please,

suspect damp wiring or alarm control module fault. recomend look for a good sparky!!
