2001 Citroen Xsara Picasso loud noise developed around belts area,plus smell

My picasso has just started making a loud noise around belts area,sounds maybe like a pulley has seized or something,as there is a smell which comes with it too.Ive put my ear to a screwdriver on the cam area,powers steering pump,and alternator,and sound seems worse at cam and powers steering area.alternator seems quiter,any ideas?

Need to get it checked out / fixed before it develops into something serious .

Mine has started making what I can best describe as a 'twittering' or whistling noise all the time when running. I thought it may be water pump starting to go, but took it to main dealer - they said the pulleys on the alternator etc belt often develop problems and this is where the noise comes from. They quoted to replace both pulley wheels and belt, plus labour etc £188. He said that in my case though the noise is irritating it wasn't likely to be a problem at the moment, but as the noise really gets on my nerves I expect I shall have to have it done, plus it could get worse like it sounds yours is. Agree with first answer, take it to Citroen dealer so they can listen to it! Good luck.
