Faulty fuel level indicator

2001 Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0 cdi sx
Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Year: 2001
Variant: 2.0 cdi sx
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I purchased this car last week & the fuel level indicator was working fine up until yesterday. The problem is as follows... On the instument display panel there is a small symbol of a car with a count down figure underneath it. I noticed yesterday the countdown figures read 9417 & are increasing as i drive the car. I rang a Citroen dealer who confirmed the figures should only decrease as you drive the car as these figures indicate how many miles you have left before running out of fuel. Any positive advice & i'll glorify your name in heaven...when i get there, regards Trev.

Not familar with that car , and could be wrong , but is this figure not the speedo trip reading ? Like most cars nowadays you have a reading of how many miles left of fuel in tank , but you usually also have a trip reading setting i.e if you want to see how long a journey is . If left in that setting , it just keeps on adding miles since last zeroed until reset .

You may have altered the setting by pushing button on end of stalk ? Here is someone with same type problem on other forum.

Hi!
I wonder if any one can help concerning this problem?
I have a 2003 Xsara picasso HDI exclusive with a trip computer stalk by the steering wheel. Normally, you can press the end of the stalk to change the display on the dash (fuel consumption, last service, radio/cd, etc). However, this has stopped functioning and now only the predicted fuel range is displayed (if you change the volume or cd, then it shows details of that for a short while before going back to fuel range.
Could this possibly be a dirty contact in the stalk? If so, can the stalk be dismantled to sort this problem out?
Otherwise, am I looking at having to get a new trip computer stalk?
Any advice gratefully received!!
Thanks
Mark.

If you didn't get owners handbook with car , you normally can get free download on web if needed .

Many thanks guys for your sound advice so far. The trip meter is located on the left side of the instrument display panel just below the mileometer display. This can be returned to zero by pressing the button to the left of this trip meter reading. I'm going to investigate the suggestion made by another helper/advisor by pressing the steering column stalks either side of the steering wheel. Who finds a friend, finds a treasure, regards Trev.
