2008 Citroen Xsara Picasso poor mpg 30?

I have very poor MPG my in car says its 30.1 overhalbut nerve changes where as the real time does change a lot 15 to 300 mpg going down hill have not done a fuel / milage check but I know its poor due to the amount of fuel I put in
any ideas

Check the basics first of all , plugs and air filter
