2004 Citroen Xsara Picasso engine cuts out when starting

Variant: 1,6
starts 1st tme but cuts out when you take foot of accelerator this happens 4/5 times. appears to run allright but in in slow moving traffic engine sometimes speeds up and have to switch off and on again to bring back to normal tickover speed. Also temp gauge has recently stopped going to full 3 bars an stays on two bars. Dont know if the two are connected but would appreciate any advise. many thanks

Probably,
the coolant temperature sensor when cold is vital.
'In old school it "pulls on the choke",
If your old enough to remember chokes!
And as the engine warms up it plays a significant part in idle speed.
