Engin light on Glowing exshaust knocking and backfiring

The car got run out of petrol so I took the car to fill up, on the journey the car started to get sluggish and the exshaust was backfiring, I could barley get out of 3 rd gear let alone over 30mph. I filled the car up (with petrol) but the problem persisted. I drove another 2-3 miles and the engine light came on and the car started to get worse struggling to get out of 2nd gear about 26mph max speed, all awhile it was still backfiring. When I got home I looked under the car and where the exhaust comes out of the engine bulk into the cat converter the joint to the tail pipe was glowing orange. Possible the cat has gone but what about the backfiring and engine light kno king etc......???

Glowing exhaust manifold is a dead giveaway that some part of the internal of the exhaust have collapsed and blocked it.

As suggested , sounds plugged cat or exhaust .Another possibility if not that , timing belt jumped and timing badly retarded .
