Gratering noise and steering wheel judder

have got intermittent grater when moving in1st or 2nd gear and slight judder on steering wheel,noise goes in 3rd gear but judder still their.no noise going downhill in second gear,been told it could be gearbox or stearing rack but not sure.anybody got any definite answer to problem

Would be worthwhile checking front wheel bearings for wear .

checked for movement on front bearings and spun wheels to listen for noise but no movement or noise from wheel bearing,done tests as Haynes manual has said,but still no wiser
