Knocking on acceleration and braking

2000 Citroen Xsara Picasso
Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
when I set off I hear a loud Knock and then again when I brake. whilst driving if I accelerate then take my foot off the pedal again it knocks. Have jacked up the car and turned the drive shafts whilst holding the wheel and there is no play however when I let go of the drive shafts and turn the wheel in gear there is a lot of play and then a knock. Is the gear box doomed? or could it be the diff bearing?

Thanks for the info whittingehame.
You were spot on with diagnosis, who would have thought that a £5 support arm bush could cause so much noise and trouble to replace. Ended up replacing the whole bracket and now no more Knocking.
