2000 Citroen Xsara Picasso brake lights at rear go on and off whilst driving

Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Year: 2000

Hi please could anyone help. I'm wondering if this is a simple problem that i could maybe fix myself first. Rear brake lights flash on and off whilst driving without using the pedal, only realized when police pulled me over. Nothing on dashboard shows that this is happening? Please help :)

My handbrake bar has started to become very easy to lift, I have lifted up the carpet and noticed that a black clip that holds the cable in place has broken so cable could slip out at any time...could this make my brake lights flash? and do you know what part i should get (name of it) and maybe where from to fix it please? also i have tried looking for switch under the pedal but i dont think im capable of getting to it so maybe better off letting a garage take a look which is why im trying to rule out all other possible causes first :)

The handbrake should not affect the brake lights .You will need to get the h/brake cable checked out to see what is needed .Some info on switch location , 5 min job .

" The switch has two wires and is clearly visible where the fusebox cover is removed. The connector is about 6mm square and has a cutout on one side, although you wont see this until you have removed the plug. I rotated the switch clockwise to allow the lights to go off."
