2006 Citroen Xsara Picasso starter motor

Hi everyone
I need some help my picasso starts first time when it's been stood for a while but when I turn egnition off after a decent run it struggles to start again it just makes a load clicking sound. A couple of weeks ago a message came on dashboard battery charge fault then disappeared. all dash board lights and all other lights are bright but yesterday dashboard went blank for a while then came back on. I'm going to test battery tomorrow to see if it's that but I have been told it could be the starter motor if it is could I change it myself ? Or is it a job that needs to be done at a garage? Would like any feed back as I'm a novice when it comes to cars.

I would get your battery and alternator load tested first before touching the starter .
