Ignition switch jammed/not working

I arrived home and the ignition key wouldn't turn to switch engine off. I selected 4th gear to stall engine then disconnected battery to turn ignition lights off. After 10 minutes of waggling the key turned and came out. I re-connected battery and ignition lights stayed on whatever position the key was in. Starting position did not function. Any thoughts please?

Very common fault on that car , will require a new switch .
