2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso diagnostics say's the engine is still running when the key is in my hand

Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Year: 2002
Variant: 2.0 HDI
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When trying to start the car the starter motor turns fine and there is plenty of power. My mechanic has recently replaced the Cam Sensor which seemed to solve the problem for a couple of day's, but now I have an intermittent ignition problem. My mechanic has put his diagnostic computer on my car and found that the EMU thinks the engine is still running even if the key is removed from the ignition.

" My mechanic has put his diagnostic computer on my car and found that the EMU thinks the engine is still running even if the key is removed from the ignition."

I've tried disconnecting the battery several times now but it has no effect.

According to the diagnostics the Engine Management Unit thinks the engine is still running, it is not running and won't start.
