2004 Citroen Xsara Picasso stiff gearchange

Over the past few weeks the gearchange on my manuakl Xsara Picasso has become very stiff. The linkage cables appear to be sound. What is the problem, can it be fixed at home?

Normally cables / linkage seizing up .
