2006 Citroen Xsara Picasso intermittent stalling

My Citroen Xara Picasso Desire (not!) has been to the garage 3 times for the same problem. The diagnostics always say same problem but changing the part does not fix it. Problem is intermittent stalling, feels like fuel starvation, which eventually clears, but can kangaroo-hop up the road after car has been running for a while. To my untrained experience, it seems like dirt in the fuel tank/filter, but the mechanics say not.

change the fuel filter and see if that makes the difference
