Headlights / sidelights lit on startup

I have just purchased a Xsara Picasso 2.00HDI Desire 2004 (54). When I turned on the ignition the sidelights came on, when I turned again to start the engine the headlights came on while the switch was in 'off' position.

When the car is running I had to turn headlights off by switching the sidelights on. I cannot switch lights off without headlights coming on again?

Headlights work fine on headlight switch setting so would be o.k to drive in dark.

Has anyone encountered this problem and what is the cure please?
