My dads Citreon xantia cut out and when he started it back up it will rev high if you try first time but then wont go above 2000 rpm and occasionally backfires , fuses are fine I'm thinking it may be a sensor but am unfamiliar with citreon i would be grateful for any ideas regards Pete.

I would first check for any fault codes even though the lights not on there may be something there to guide you.Is the timing okay is another thought and is it missfiring

Thanks for your input , I have more info before he takes a diagnostic by process of illimination i disconected some sensors and when i remove the throttle position sensor it ran fine so i bought a new 1 and the problem remains when its connected but runs ok when its not ?

Only problem with that is you have now logged various codes which could confuse, hamper any diagnostic. But as you have gone down that route what does it run like with the maf disconnected? Have you looked internally at the throttle in case it,s car boned up.

Thanks again for your input I haven't had a chance to get back on it yet however I think either the new sensor I bought maybe faulty or it may be a related sensor problem as while the tp sensor is disconnected the car remains to run fine I shall post any further findings .
