1997 Citroen Synergie jumping out of top gear

Manual gearbox. 4 lower gears o.k. 5th gear engages but when gear lever released jumps back into neutral. Any thoughts as to how problem can be solved?

First thing I would check would be gear linkage / cables for wear .
