1999 Citroen Saxo loud crunch from back of the car when accelerating in low gears

Car: Citroen Saxo
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.0i East Coast
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I'm driving my girlfriend's car and it came from a dodgy garage who after she complained about a problem with the gears, they humiliated her.

I took it to my brother in law, and he thought it was the exhaust. I took it to the exhaust garage and they took it up on the ramp...

The exhaust had a deteriorated rubber spacer and the exhaust appeared to be loose, but on closer inspection a bolt was missing from the engine to a pivot that forms part of the engine mounting.

If anyone experiences a bang when they accelerate in low gears, its probably something like this.

The garage were great about this, and after adapting a bolt to fit, they only charged 20 pounds!

The solution is included in the problem.

The loud crunch or bang was probably caused by the garage replacing the gear linkage and forgetting to tighten the bolts afterwards!

The lower bolt had simply rattled out and dropped off. The upper bolt was so loose that it could easily have rattled out too!
