2005 Citroen C8 egr

Car: Citroen C8
Year: 2005
Variant: 2.0l hdi
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I have the Citroen c8 hdi its got a running problem.
It smokes and chugs while at idle and a sort of misfire at around 1200 rpm
I've located the problem to part of the egr valve there's a little black valve ( round) to the left side of the engine.
The valve has a arm that when activated causes the smoke and misfire.
If I remove the vacuum pipe to this valve the car runs perfect!
I'm after advice as to what this part is and what it does that could affect the car? And if possible a way to fix it

Many thanks in advance

Look forward to some help :)

what you are describing sounds like the egr butterfly.this may not be the problem but another butterfly stuck some where. As a temporary fix you may be able to blank the vacuum pipe to it

Okay thanks for the advice
ive run the car without the vacuum connected and it runs fine!
would it pass an emission test without the pipe? Also what butterfly valve would it likely be as these engines are pigs to work on it seems the arm gets stuck at times and when its fully up is when the lumpy idle starts

Again thanks for the feedback :)

Think i answered the wrong way as came up as a solution ive now taken out the egr valve and pipe work to clean but it didn't look to bad is there anything else to look for? I'm not 100% sure if there's a egr cooler any more help would be great
