2003 Citroen C5 gear change very stiff and getting worse can only select 3 & 4th

Car: Citroen C5
Year: 2003
Variant: 1.8L manual
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The problem has been getting gradually worse. initially we couldn't select reverse now we can only select 3rd and 4th. checked under the car and found a bit of an oil leak round the gear box area, breather cap missing off the filler nut, topped up with oil and sprayed WD40 over the linkage but so far hasn't seamed to help.
Its only done 40K from new we are the second owners and its been very good (up to now)
any advice is much appreciated.

cheers

Sounds like the clutch is worn out. Can you select the gears when the car is not running?
Normally when the clutch goes it will lose reverse then 1st 2nd etc

cable remote on the c5 sounds like it needs a new cable & adjusting. i had same issue could not get out of 5th gear but would go in ok turned out to be a worn cable from remote to gearbox.

it is the cable that is at end of life, i have had this issue the cables are not cheap but will cure the fault it is yet another common fault with the c5. i did remove the remote and dropped the cable off the gear box left them soak in a bucket of oil it did help but it was short lived and had to put new cables on it. the wat forward is to take the cables off at the gear box, then try the gear change to see if it is the cable some times the gear box linkage can be tight giving the same issue.
