2001 Citroen C5 rear door/boot wont open

Car: Citroen C5
Year: 2001
Variant: hatchback
i bought my C5 Second hand about 4 yrs ago, and has been pretty reliable, however recently the boot has at time refused to open. The locking/unlocking mechanism functions when i check it (i use a screwdriver to activate the lock capture when door is in open position), but when it is closed into the actual boot housing it then struggles to release again when i press the boot release button.i can hear the motor so it doing something.Problem seems to be getting worse at time goes on.
Any suggestions please.

is the boot difficult to shut, could just be a case of adjusting boot striker and rubber stops, give the boot latch a spray with wd40

Thanks for info. i was away for a few days . But when i got back i got the boot open from the inside.i took the interior black plastic trim of to expose the latching element of the lock. It appeared that the tailgate lock was working ok but the captive bar was pushing upward a little thus preventing the lock from releasing fully when the release button was pressed.
Im not but it might have been that someone had tried to force the boot open and in the process affected the locking mechanism.
I used a small hammer ( a bit crude i know) to knock/bend the top of the bar down a few millimetres and this seems to have done the trick. Fingers crossed it will be ok from now on.
