2006 Citroen C5 fuel starvation

Car: Citroen C5
Year: 2006
Variant: 2.0 HDi 138BHp Auto estate
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Drove 390 miles and parked car up for 2 days. Drove about 5 miles before engine stopped. Turned over but wouldn't fire up. When I opened the filler cap met with large intake of air - diagnosed as fuel starvation by local (Green Flag) recovery driver. Towed to local garage and refuelled & engine fired up.
Computer showed 90 miles of fuel left. Had averaged 48.5 mpg over 390 miles, but only took 42 litres of fuel (tank has 66 litre capacity) to fill it to the brim.
How does air enter the fuel tank to replace the fuel being drawn out? Through the filler cap or through a breather pipe? How do I checked if it is blocked?
How do you reset the car's fuel computer? Have already tried leaving battery disconnected overnight without success.
Thanks
Chris

Its not unusaul for the fuel tank to be under a vacuum any breathing it does is generally through the breathers.
Are you or have you been using bio diesel because this can sludge up the fuel filter and cause bad running and non start or is it due a filter, is it high mileage etc.
Not sure if you can alter the fuel computor, is it measuring the comsumption in real time or over an average distance as this could determine how much goes back in your tank
