Car want start straight away

Put key in start car then car tells me I have not got gear lever in the park position when it is I then have to push on the gear lever in to park position then it starts what's going on. Is it the gearbox sensor?

Think there's a selector mechanism under the gear selector cover which might need adjustment/replacement.

depending on whether it is a 4HP20 or AL4 box but the multi function switch or cable on box may need adjustment
