Engine died

driving home from a two hundred mile drive slowed down to enter home the just stopped tried to start the engine would not turn over no overheating ,warning lights or noises just stopped had it delivered to garage tried to turn over by hand would not turn over forward how ever it would turn over backwards garage said he has never seen anything like it in 50years of doing the job has anybody got any ideas please

Sounds like timing has jumped for whatever reason.

These engines run a timing belt up to 1 camshaft,
from there a chain drives to the other cam,
so anything could happen in there.
PLUS!! these engines have a habit of throwing camshaft followers off their posts,
which pretty much matches your symptoms,
the locking aspect comes from the cam lobe rotating until it hits/jams against the wayward followers.
There are "up rated" followers from PSA.
Get your guy to lift off the cam cover and have a look,usually self evident.
