2001 Citroen C5 automatic transmission problem

Car: Citroen C5
Year: 2001
Variant: 2.0 hdi auto
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Hello
I'm Irish living in sydney. Made mistake of buying citroen in Oz(Mechanics here allergic to european cars especially french). It has trouble dropping into 1st gear when you stop at junctions etc. Have to let roll slowly for last few meters or it's stuck in 2nd and can start to vibrate.
Sometimes on a steep hill if in 2nd it feels like a clutch slipping in a manual car. Have to go to manual and drop to 1st until over hill. Had someone reset the sensors and everyone here seems to say the gearbox is a sealed unit and can only be fixed with reconditioned box from france at $4,500 plus labour. Car is worth less.
Other times it can give growling noises and sometimes when its not happy it gives a thump to let me know!
Polish mechanic in work says a torque convertor would have 95% chance of fixing it. Found crowd here who recondition them and waiting to see if they like france or what cost is. If anyone has experience I'd love to know if I should pursue the problem or take the car out and shoot it (cut my losses)
Thanks

Take it the oil level is ok and is not overdue changing ? On that year could be wear and tear or knackered box .Never liked Citroens and tended to avoid servicing or working on them whenever possible .I think you need to get it checked out / diagnosed first with the correct equipment .Otherwise could end up throwing good money after bad .
