2005 Citroen C1 power steering failure

Hiya my citroen C1's power steering has been failing recently, the light on the dash is on as well. Citroen did a diagnostics test saying the component had gone and i'd be looking at around £400-£500 to fix it. Does anybody have any solutions that might be cheaper? Do local garages do this sort of thing?
