1985 Citroen BX difficult to start

Car is extremely difficult to start, at all times, but especially in cold conditions. Requires dozens of attempts, flattens batteries and if I'm lucky will finally start. I am completely unfamiliar with these engines and I'm wondering where to begin troubleshooting it.

No different from any other older car of that year . Need checking basics , plugs , filters , leads , compressions .
