Temperature gauge

2001 Citroen Berlingo 1.6 petrol
Car: Citroen Berlingo
Year: 2001
Variant: 1.6 petrol
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Berlingo Multispace, Y reg , 2001, 1.6 petrol.

Temperature gauge on dashboard suddendly starts to rise and stop light goes on when the red zone reached. This happens intermittently or not at all. Engine seems cool; had a new thermostat fitted; fan working; does not affect driving, drove 300 miles to London and back. Stop light comes on and beeps. Then the pointer goes down, light goes off and stops beeping. It may go up again or not. Drove to London with the guage moving all the time, then on return journey, nothing.

A bit alarming and son taking his test in the car. Don't want it to be invalidated due to this issue.

Many thanks for any help.

Car works really well otherwise.

Try changing the coolant temp sensor , inexpensive part .Also check the wiring to the sensor for corrosion or damage / chaffing .

Thanks Legend
That sounds about right. Will also look at the wiring.
